More MRI and CT scans done than ever thanks to new machines, province says

The BC Government says more people were able MRIs and CT scans in 2023-24 than ever before.

“In 2023-24, we worked together with the health authorities and medical imaging teams to increase our capacity to perform more medical imaging in BC,” said Health Minister Adrian Dix.

“The data shows we have performed more than 322,000 MRI exams and over 994,000 CT scans.”

This includes 20,647 MRI scans and 67,057 CT scans done in the north, compared with 6,331 and 39,327 done in 2016-17.

According to the province, the increase in exams and scans is the result of adding 18 net-new MRI scanners and nine net-new CT scanners.

This includes two new CT scanners and one new MRI scanner in the North.
