Telkwa disc golfer to play at national championship

A Telkwa disc golfer is preparing to attend the 2024 Harvest Huck Canadian Nationals.

Gareth Reid and his team will be traveling to Clearwater, BC in September to attend as an amateur.

The selection process for who attends the tournament puts amateurs last to be picked.

“To find out that we get to go down south and meet some of the actual touring professionals down there was really exciting,” said Reid.

He’ll be traveling with Jonathan Heartman, Dean LaBonte, and Dan Perlman, who are also from Telkwa.

Each has mostly played on local courses, like Ranger Park in Smithers, which Reid said won’t give him an advantage.

“Some of these ones at the championships are quite a bit longer. They have par fives that instead of going 300 feet, it could be 700 feet,” he said.

His in with disc golfing was during the pandemic because it was an outdoor activity.

“We’re just in it for fun. I’m in the 50 plus category as well and friends of ours are going down in the 40 plus, 50 plus, and 60 plus,” he said

The tournament starts September 13th and runs till the 15th.
