Battle in the North, a functional fitness competition, returns to Masich Place Stadium this weekend.
Head Programmer Stephen O’Beirne said the event has nearly doubled in size from its 2023 debut, this year 71 athletes will compete.
“Functional fitness is a combination of Olympic weightlifting and gymnastics combined with monostructural cardio – running, skipping, burpees,” O’Beirne said. “Our youngest athlete is 17 and we have a lot of athletes in their 40s and 50s.”
He added some are coming from as far away as Saskatchewan to compete.
O’Beirne credited the increased interest this year to a successful event last year.
“Everyone was really excited over last year’s event,” he said. “You take your lessons, there are some things we could have done better and some things we did a really good job of.”
Registration for the event is closed, but Masich Place will be open for spectators.
O’Beirne added every event is set up in a race format, so a casual viewer will not need detailed knowledge about crossfit or the mechanics of a certain event.
The event will span today and Sunday.
