The first Airport Workers Day is being celebrated nationwide today (Wednesday), including in Prince George.
“They are often forgotten in terms of their contribution,” YXS President and CEO Gord Duke said about his staff. “Everybody that works at an airport [contributes] to your journey safely and effectively. Today is a chance to highlight the good work that goes on at Canada’s airports every single day.”
35 Canadian airports recognized the day, YXS celebrated by welcoming all its staff and Mayor Simon Yu for a barbecue.
“By celebrating the dynamic and diverse people who work in our airports, we aim to shine a light on the many career opportunities that are possible within Canada’s aviation sector. Airport Workers Day represents our gratitude for the more than 200,000 people who work, day in and day out, to keep Canadians and our economy moving,” said Monette Pasher, President of the Canadian Airports Council.
The timing of the celebration comes at an interesting time, earlier today WestJet engineers issued a second strike notice after the union rejected the company’s latest offer.
“We are not sure what the direct impact will be yet,” Duke said. “My best advice is to check with your airline, they are going to have the latest information.”
Duke added the airport is putting plans in place people miss flights due to the strike and are stuck in Prince George.
The first time the union issued a strike notice prior to the recent second round of bargaining, over 40 flights were canceled by WestJet, impacting 6,500 travelers.
