Residents advised to avoid section of river due to “sanitary sewer leak”

A section of the Nechako River under the John Hart Bridge has been marked for a sanitary sewer leak.

The City of Prince George strongly recommends boaters and recreational users avoid the area, which is roughly 250 square meters large.

The city says it is “working closely with B.C.’s Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, and Environment Canada to mitigate health risks and environmental impacts.”

While they say the leak does not currently pose a health threat, they are monitoring the river downstream and will issue a statement if the situation changes.

This sanitary sewer line was first installed in 1977, the city’s utilities division expects to have a secondary line completed by November.
