Seven week old Cariboo Regional District strike is now over

CRD workers and the employer have ratified a tentative agreement.

The BC General Employees Union (BCGEU) SAYS THE agreement will run from November 1, 2023 to October 31, 2026 and includes a total wage increase of 12.5%, an increase to the maximum vacation entitlement, fairer call-back language, and other improvements.

Paul Finch, President of the BCGEU, which represents CRD workers, issued the following statement.

“Our members’ strike demonstrated just how indispensable they are to the functioning of the CRD and the overall health and wellness of their communities. From the libraries and waste management to local building permit departments and more, our members were missed by their communities, and their value was underscored every hour that they couldn’t clock in for a shift.”

Finch went on to say that “it was tough for them to be away from the jobs that they love, but the endless support that they received from their neighbours got them through this long stretch.”

He added that “I have no doubt that the solidarity forged on those picket lines will continue to serve our members, well into the future, as they continue to push for improved working conditions and a more community-centric Cariboo Regional District.”

Workers in Quesnel, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House went on strike back on May 13th.

The union was pushing for a wage increase that was tied to inflation. (the Consumer Price Index)
