Hazelton’s Regan Yee has her eyes set on the Summer Olympics in Paris this summer.
This will be her second appearance on the Olympic stage after competing in Tokyo.
She holds the Canadian women’s record for the fastest 3000 metre steeplechase at just over nine minutes.
Yee qualified for the Olympics during the World Athletic Championship last year in Budapest and said the process this go around has been less stressful.
“We had a super intense month to qualify; three races and it was kind of do or die,” she said.
Yee came 30th in the 3000-metre steeplechase, something she hopes to improve on.
“My personal goal would be to make the final. I’ve been to three world championships and one Olympics but haven’t made a final yet,” Yee said.
Having grown up in Hazelton, she didn’t have the track and hurdles to train for the sport but said that didn’t stop her.
“I would not be where I am now if I hadn’t grown up in Hazelton. For one thing, I didn’t over train and that becomes a problem for a lot of young athletes,” she explained.
As a youth, she signed up for a club that ran at Smithers Secondary where she trained with others twice a week.
While she will be running a steeplechase in Paris, she hasn’t decided if she will do the 3000 metre again or do the longer 5000 metre race.
