Kin 3 flooring gets upgrade from recycled tires

The City of Prince George has completed the Kin 3 Arena renovation project with the help of Tire Stewardship BC. (TSBC)

The project was partly funded by the TSBC Community Grant Program, an initiative to replace aging and damaged flooring throughout the arena, including dressing rooms, hallways and washrooms.

“We run a grant program every year, and we invite applicants to apply for a grant because they have used BC recycled rubber in their projects,” said TSBC Executive Director Rosemary Sutton.

“A lot of those project will be playgrounds, but we also get applications for ones like this.”

The new flooring was made from 661 scrap tires collected and processed in BC through Tire Stewardship BC’s tire recycling program.

According to Tire Stewardship BC, the recycled rubber tiles provide superior durability and accessibility for all users, improving community facilities around the province.

Sutton said other projects that use used tires include running tracks and playground bases.

“I think it’s because of the fact that they create that cushion,” she explained.

“It’s a cushioned fall for the kids on the playground, we hear that also from athletes who are using, or even just walkers who are using the running tracks, that there is that sort of cushiony feel underneath their feet.”

The TSBC Community Grant Program promotes and supports initiatives like this benefitting local communities across BC, and aims to encourage the recycling of tires into innovative products.

Sutton added TSBC will be in Prince George for Junk in the Trunk on September 28th, collecting tires.
