Prince George BC SPCA branch caring for husky who came in with red, swollen eyes

The BC SPCA’s North Cariboo Branch in Prince George is caring for a seven-year-old husky who came to the branch with extremely red, painful, inflamed eyes, which left her blind.

According to the BC SPCA, Keela was surrendered by the owner, who couldn’t afford the veterinary care required to treat her.

“Her eyes were difficult to look at,” said BC SPCA Senior Manager of the North Jamey Blair.

“They were so red and swollen. It was clear she was in a great deal of discomfort and unable to see.”

Blair added Keela’s nose was rubbed raw, she had overgrown nails, and her teeth and mouth were not in good shape.

She was immediately taken to a veterinary clinic.

It was determined after an examination the inflammation in Keela’s eyes was caused by high pressure, and couldn’t be managed with medication or repaired surgically.

Both of her eyes were removed, and she may need oral surgery.

“She is a very friendly, social dog,” Blair said.

“Even when Keela arrived at the animal centre in pain and blind, she responded so well to everyone she met. She was just as sweet at the veterinary clinic.”

Blair said Keela has bounced back from both eye surgeries, and she is scheduled for her dental examination, at which point they will determine if oral surgery is needed.
