Lightning brings 44 new fire starts in the Prince George Fire Centre

There were 44 new fire starts across the Prince George Fire Centre in the last two days.

Fire Information Officer Sharon Nickel says crews are responding to multiple incidents in the Robson Valley and Vanderhoof zones.

One of the priority fires we are responding to is located in our Vanderhoof Zone, it’s the Pitka Creek wildfire,” she said.

“It’s located approximately eight kilometres west of Highway 27 and 16 kilometres southwest of the townsite of Fort St. James.”

Nickel noted the fire is about 200 hectares and ground personnel are responding to the fire, with support from heavy equipment and aerial resources.

She added the priority fire in the Robson Valley zone is the Beaver River wildfire.

“It is approximately 140 hectares in size and we do have heavy equipment, ground personnel, and aviation resources working on that one as well.”

Nickel said most of the new starts were caused by lightning.

“Over the last week, we’ve had in excess of 20,000 lightning strokes across the Prince George Fire Centre,” she said.

“While our fire centre is quite large, it’s more than a quarter of the province, we have seen some kind of concentrated cells move through the Vanderhoof/Fort St. James area, as well as the Robson Valley and the southeast portion of our Prince George zone.”
