Quesnel cowboy is a double champion at Quesnel Rodeo

Denton Spiers won two titles at the 57th annual Quesnel Rodeo at Alex Fraser Park on Sunday.

Spiers was the only one to last the full 8 seconds on a bull all weekend long.

He scored an 80 on Puddin back on Saturday afternoon.

Spiers also won the #8.5 Team Roping title along with his partner Lane Cork, who ironically is also better known for his bull riding.

They followed up a time of 8.6 seconds in Saturday morning’s slack performance with an 8 and 3 on Sunday.

Virgil Poffenroth of Riske Creek captured the Tie-Down Roping title.

His two times were a 14-flat and 13.5 seconds.

Quesnel’s Steve Lloyd, a former Canadian champion in that event, thought he was the winner.

Lloyd had the fastest time on Saturday with an 11 and 6, and stopped the clock in 10.8 seconds on Sunday, but he was given a no time because of a relatively new rule in rodeo that punishes the cowboy if the calf comes down too hard when he’s roped.

Clayton Honeybourn from Quesnel ended up second overall.

Tanner Loring from Riske Creek won the Junior Steer Riding title with a 79 and then a 71.

A Quesnel team took home the championship buckles in the Wild Horse Race this year.

Alan Puhallo’s team won two of the three go rounds and also had a third.

Other champions in Quesnel in the main events included Chase Siemens (Vanderhoof) in the Bareback, Jaret Cooper (Armstrong) in the Saddle Bronc, Norman Breen (Princeton) in the Steer Wrestling, Rika Atonie (Cache Creek) in the Breakaway Roping, Turner James (Cache Creek) in the Junior Breakaway Roping, and BJ and Riley Isnardy (Cache Creek) in the Open Team Roping.

There were a number of near misses for Cariboo competitors in the Barrel Racing.

Kaitlynn Lulua from Williams Lake led going into the final but left the door open with a run of 17.228 seconds.

Laura James from Cache Creek had a time of 16.936 seconds to nose her out.

Ellie Hill from Williams Lake also led and finished second in the Pee Wee Barrels after a run of 18.341..

Ainslee Meise from Prince George won with a time of 17.597 seconds.

Kenzie Lloyd from Quesnel had the fastest time of the day in the Junior Barrel Racing with a time of 17.079 seconds, but it was not quite fast enough to overtake Chloe Gautron of Peachland who had a healthy lead going in.
