Update 8:00 a.m. today (Tuesday)
Thousands of residents, travellers and campers are slowly scattering across two provinces as a wildfire has prompted the evacuation of both Jasper National Park and the Jasper townsite.
The evacuation order went out last night (Monday around 9:00 PDT), as a wildfire near the municipality remains out of control.
Evacuees were initially told to head to Valemount, approximately 125 kilometres away.
However, updates from officials on social media say the small town has limited resources and cannot accommodate any more evacuees at this point.
Evacuation reception centres are set up in Grande Prairie and Calgary.
Update: 2:33 a.m.:
The City of Prince George is suggesting Jasper evacuees go to one of two designated reception sites, Grand Prairie or Calgary.
Evacuees are welcome to stay in the CN Centre Parking lot in Prince George before continuing to Grand Prairie.
The City of Prince George’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is actively monitoring the evolving situation in Jasper where an evacuation order has been issued due to nearby wildfire activity.
City officials in Prince George are awaiting further direction from the Province of B.C., which is actively coordinating with officials from the Province of Alberta.
To assist with any evacuees arriving in Prince George, the Emergency Support Services (ESS) have been activated.
Evacuees are asked to check the City of Prince George website for updates.
Reception trailers are located at the parking lot between the horse paddocks and Ice oval (2187 Ospika Blvd. S).
Easiest access will be from the 18th avenue entrance closest to the roundabout.
