Several buildings have burned as Jasper wildfire reaches townsite

Crews are desperately trying to save Jasper today (Thursday), as a ten-thousand hectare wildfire moves into the town.

Several buildings have already burned, and structural firefighters are trying to save critical infrastructure, including the town’s waste-water treatment plant, communications facilities, and the Trans-Mountain pipeline.

The flames moved into the town of 41-hundred yesterday evening, driven by high winds.

Wildfire teams and anyone else without breathing apparatus were evacuated to Hinton, Alberta last night after heavy smoke made it too dangerous for them to continue working.

Parks Canada says an evacuation order issued Monday night has affected about 25-thousand residents, seasonal workers, and visitors.
