Wheelin’ Warriors of the North hit $100,000 raised for cancer ahead of Tour de Cure

The Wheelin’ Warriors of the North are less than a month away from the Tour de Cure.

The Tour de Cure is a 200 kilometre bike ride between Cloverdale and Hope, to raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation.

Team Founder and Captain Karin Piche said there are 53 riders registered in the Wheelin’ Warriors of the North, but some won’t be able to ride this year due to various reasons.

“I’m thinking that, by the looks of the fundraising page at the moment, we have about 30 riders that will be participating,” Piche said.

“What that really means is they’ve reached their $2,500 minimum by the time we start the ride on August 24th.”

The team hit $100,000 raised for the BC Cancer Foundation today (Monday), but Piche said they want to go higher.

“Of course our goal is to raise as much money as possible, so there really is no limit,” she said.

Piche added the team has been out in the community, taking part in various fundraising activities.

“One of our biggest fundraisers is the gala, but unfortunately we weren’t able to put that one together this year. As a team, we’ve been out selling 50/50 tickets for example at the Spruce Kings games, several people on the team have held pub nights and barbeques, so everyone on the team is pitching in and doing their individual fundraising and/or getting together in small groups and doing some small team fundraising events.”

Piche said they start training for the 200 km bike ride in the winter with spin classes.

“Once the weather kind of cooperates in the spring, we get outside,” she said.

“Actually today (Monday) we’re going out on, I call it a short ride, we’re going to do a short ride to the end of North Nechako, which is approximately 30 kilometres as a group.”

This year’s Tour de Cure takes place on August 24th and 25th.
