BC’S minimum wage to see slight increase

Starting tomorrow, minimum wage in BC will increase to $10.45 an hour.

Liquor servers will also see an increase to $9.20 an hour.

Richard Truscott with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says the marginal increase will help small businesses in the province.

“Thankfully, this increase is pretty small especially when you compare it to what we have seen in Alberta where it has gone up a couple of dollars, anything about 20 cents can cause disruption for small businesses.”

Truscott also explained the wage gap between regular employees and liquor servers.

“The people who serve alcohol typically earn tips and many servers make well beyond the minimum wage with upwards of 15 to 20 dollars an hour which is why we see the gap for liquor servers.”

Starting in 2016, the province is indexing increases to both wages to BC’s Consumer Prince Index.
