Crews with the Prince George Fire Centre did a good job of containing any sort of fire activity over the August long weekend.
Fire Information Officer, Sarah Budd issued the rundown of what took place over the past four days to Vista Radio.
“Over the course of the long weekend, we had 12 wildfire starts – four are now out, three are being held, two are under control and three are out of control. Overall, we got 75% of the wildfires that started over the long weekend being held, out or under control.”
Budd added 10 out of the 12 new starts were caused by lightning.
She added the Trembleur Lake blaze northwest of Fort Saint James that was first reported on Saturday is currently 3.4 hectares in size aviation and heavy equipment resources available – the fire is currently visible in other places such as Granisle and Ruby Rock Park.
She mentioned the Peace District remains the fire centre’s hot spot, the new blazes that are popping are located in different places.
“We are seeing some more activity in the VanJam and Robson Valley zones where they took a little bit of lightning yesterday.”
Since April 1st, 356 wildfires have occurred in the Prince George Fire Centre this year burning 743,560 hectares – making up 81.6% of the provincial total (910,976).
There are 341 active wildfires in BC, eight of which are of note – the Antler Creek blaze located in the Cariboo Fire Centre continues to burn out of control at 14,277 hectares.
