Kodiaks defence picked apart by Huskers

The Prince George Kodiaks are officially in a losing streak after falling 48-28 to the Valley Huskers.

Hundreds flocked to Masich Place Stadium last night (Saturday) for what would turn into the Kodiaks’ third loss in a row.

“We’ve got to improve in a bunch of areas,” said Kodiaks Head Coach Jamie Boreham.

“We got to get back at film, figure out where we’re missing on some things, we got to make changes.”

It was a rough day for the Kodiaks on defence.

The Valley’s running attack made solid gains when they handed off the ball, and they were able to find wide open receivers in the flats often.

The Kodiaks also struggled to bring down the Huskers’ ball carriers.

“A lot of it’s fundamentals of tackling, maybe we’re going to have to look at some young guys, give them some opportunities and see if they want to step up and rise up to the occasion,” Boreham said.

“System-wise, we’re not filling the right gaps, we’re getting blocked in ways we shouldn’t, and our tackling, we were tackling shoelaces, we couldn’t tackle tonight.”

“You can’t give up that many points in a football game and expect to win.”

While the Kodiaks’ defence struggled, the offence played one of their better games of the season so far.

Sawyer Thiessen threw touchdown passes to Andrew Brown and Brady Van Someren, while Xander Shane found the endzone on the ground once.

“Sawyer’s a competitor, he’s got a fire that burns inside there, I think that the more he’s in a position to compete higher I think we see a better leader,” Boreham said.

“He plays with urgency in those moments, there’s some things we’ve got to do help him clean up stuff.”

The Kodiaks gave the ball away three times, as Thiessen threw two interceptions, and Carson Briere had the ball ripped out of his hands by a Husker defensive back on a strip.

“We just got to keep competing, keep attacking practices, and keep getting on the same page,” Thiessen said.

“If we can eliminate the little mistakes, we’re going to be just fine.”

It was another good day for Brady Harper kicking the ball, splitting the uprights on two tries from 14 and 35 yards.

With the loss, the Kodiaks are now 1-3 on the season, and sit fifth in the BC Football Conference.
