Expired lease keeps Vanderhoof Flying Club proposals grounded

Members of the Vanderhoof flying club still have a while to wait before they try to make some changes around the airport.

“We were kind of focusing on two things going into last night’s council meeting,” says club president Royce Schaff, “One was parking at the airport, being able to charge something for parking to pay for some sort of airport maintenance, like snow removal… And the second was being able to build a temporary hangar to house the flying club’s aircraft.”

But the focus quickly turned to the Town’s lease agreement with the club, which expired in 1997.

“Right now, we don’t really have a lease agreement with the flying club,” explains Director of Operations Paul Carver, “There was an old agreement, which was a five-year agreement, and it was put in place back in 1992.”

The old lease is technically still in effect, but a lull in club activity in the late 90s may have caused the oversight…

“They just kind of got resurrected over the past few years, with new people involved, and that type of stuff,” says Carver, “So there’s a desire now to draft up a new lease.”

Carver went on to say a new lease is a top priority, and shouldn’t take long to work out… But until then, parking fees and a temporary hangar will just have to wait.
