Blind dog brought into BC SPCA’s PG branch finds forever home

A blind dog brought into the BC SPCA’s North Cariboo branch has found a forever home.

Keela was brought into the branch earlier this summer, with extremely red, swollen eyes.

According to the BC SPCA, she was surrendered by her owner, who couldn’t afford the care required to treat her.

Her nose was also rubbed raw, she had overgrown nails, and her teeth and mouth were in rough shape.

When she was taken to a veterinarian, it was determined the inflammation in her eyes couldn’t be treated, and both eyes were surgically removed.

“We were a little worried that her blindness might mean she would wait longer to find a forever home,” said Jodi Dunlop, manager of the BC SPCA’s Vancouver Animal Centre.

While waiting for dental surgery, a family found Keela online and gave her a home.

“We were so thrilled when Tiara and her daughter Hannah adopted Keela,” Dunlop said.

“We did a lot of research before we decided to adopt her and got some great advise from BC SPCA staff,” Tiara said.

According to the family, Keela has been successful in “mapping out” her new home.

“She is very independent. We let her figure out where she can and cannot go,” Tiara said.

“She goes slow, and she uses her big paws to help guide her. She will gently bump against something and then correct.”

Keela has also been getting to know Shea, the 11-year-old chocolate lab in the family.

“Keela has added so much joy to our lives,” Tiara said.

“We appreciate her so much and she is such an inspiration. Watching how she experiences thing changes the way you view your life. I feel so lucky, she was meant to be a part of our family.”
