Parkinson Superwalk set for Saturday in PG

The Parkinson Superwalk is set for Saturday in Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.

“We are set up between Exploration Place and the firetruck,” explained local organizer Gina Bedomme.

“The registration opens at 11:30 and the walk itself starts at 12:30.”

Beddome said the funds raised will help the Parkinson Society of BC operate as a non-profit, and support those in our province affected by Parkinson’s.

“The Parkinson Society provides counselling, they develop programs, there is no cure for Parkinson, but you can delay it so exercise is the key component, and they develop exercise programs that work best for those with Parkinson’s,” she explained.

“They fund research, they’re always looking for a cure or something that will slow down the effects of Parkinson’s, such as tremors. They host webinars on a variety of subjects that are important to those with Parkinson on how to slow the disease, or how to have the effects of Parkinson have less effect on your day-to-day living.”

Beddome noted this is the biggest fundraiser for the Society.

“We’re also hoping to get a clinic up here, that’s where we have a crew from UBC Mobility Clinic come here so that people with Parkinson’s can see the specialist here rather than having to go to Vancouver,” she explained.

“We’re hoping to get a clinic here about four times a year, because it is difficult for people with Parkinson’s to travel, and they would bring their specialists up here and develop a team approach to dealing with Parkinson’s.”

Beddome said the delay right now is finding a Neurologist with enough time to come to Prince George three or four times a year.
