“We have work to do” SD 57 Superintendent lays out Framework for Enhanced Student Learning report

School District 57’s Board of Trustees met for the first time this school year tonight. (Tuesday)

There wasn’t a lot of action on the agenda, mostly just housekeeping items such as financial statements, and the Framework for Enhanced Student Learning report.

“Essentially it is the report card or snapshot of a variety of district indicators that we take and measure through the course of a particular school year,” said Superintendent Jameel Aziz.

Aziz didn’t go into details on the report, but summarized it by saying “we have work to do.”

“Our students are not achieving to the degree that we believe that they should be,” he said.

“We are continuing to work on strategies around literacy and numeracy so that we can start to see some improved results for our students.”

He also noted they won’t see dramatic results right away when a new program is implemented.

“The report, as our Superintendent laid out, it shows we have a lot of room for growth, so that’s an area we’re taking seriously” said SD57 Board Chair Craig Brennan following the meeting.

“One of the four quadrants we talk about is learning and in that learning quadrant, one of the things we have to focus on is improving student learning, that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Brennan said the work they’ll undertake this year will be finding out what the supports they need are.

“Are our staff getting what they need to be effective in the classroom where students can get the best possible chance to have positive outcomes as they leave, that is our mission, our number one thing we’re going to continue to work at.”

The School Board’s next meeting will be October 8th.
