T-Wolves MSOC outlast Saskatchewan; UNBC WSOC drop pair of close ones against TWU, UFV

It was just what the doctor ordered for the UNBC Timberwolves men’s soccer team.

Connor Lewis’s header past George Arnold in the 69th minute propelled the T-Wolves to a dramatic 3-2 win on Sunday over the Saskatchewan Huskies at Griffiths Stadium.

Mehdi Bounaaja opened the scoring at the eight-minute mark accepting an Isaak Tate feed on an odd-man rush.

Twenty minutes Daler Tokhirov evened the scored for the Huskies at 1-1.

The back and forth play between the two schools would continue as James Jordan potted his first Canada West goal in the 35th minute assisted by Bounaaja.

In the 63rd minute, Ethan Cabral once again brought the Huskies on even terms.

Logan Pierce made 10 saves on 12 shots as the Timberwolves improved to 1-7-2 on the season.

On Friday, UNBC dropped a 2-0 decision against Mount Royal in Calgary.

Miguel Da Rocha and Mowbray Beghin rippled the onion bag for the Cougars who improved to 4-1-4 on the season.

Pierce made 9 saves for the T-Wolves in defeat.

UNBC welcomes top-ranked UBC (5-0-2) to Masich Place Stadium Saturday and Sunday at 1pm.

In women’s action, UNBC dropped a pair of hard-fought decisions over the weekend losing 1-0 to the Fraser Valley Cascades (Friday) and 3-1 to the Trinity Western Spartans (3-1).

Jaya Bains collected a rebound that bounced off the fingertips of UNBC goalkeeper Brityn Hinsche of Williams Lake to keep the Cascades up for good.

Hinsche made nine saves in defeat while Alana Madec pitched a five-save clean sheet for Fraser Valley.

On Sunday, Trinity Western jumped out a to an early 2-0 lead in the first half courtesy of goals from Payton Izsak and Charity Field.

Mansha Sidhu extended the lead to 3-0 in the 56th minute after being credited with a UNBC own goal.

Claire Turner rippled the onion bag for UNBC in the 57th minute, placing a perfect header past Yasmine Pahal.

It was a physical game that was aided by the lack of management from head official Carols Hernandez.

One of several missed calls that drew the ire of the fans and players alike was a blatant push to the head/neck area by Sidhu on UNBC’s Blake Plummer that went undetected right in front of Hernandez.

After failing to establish a clear standard in the first half, Hernandez issued a trio of yellow cards to Sidhu (Spartans) on another push against Plummer – this time from behind followed by a pair of tacky infractions against Kate Rattee and Scarlet Thomas of UNBC.

Second-year defender Maleah Fernie had a rock-solid game on the back line for the Timberwolves, leading the charge in the second half after Kambria Mellum exited the contest in the 40th minute due to injury.

Lost in all that madness was Hinsche making a career-high 17 saves in the loss for UNBC.

The Timberwolves drop to 1-5 on the campaign and hit the road next weekend where they will face off against UBC Okanagan (Friday) and Thompson Rivers (Saturday).
