UHNBC in need of eventual Expansion

According to Northern Health, UHNBC will need to expand in the near future.

In a report to city council Monday Night, Michael McMillan with Northern Health said demand for hospital beds is increasing due to a growing number of seniors in the area.

“The Seniors population is growing” said McMillan. “Seniors account for a lot of the hospital dues as well as physician visits and other health services.”

Near the end of 2014, UHNBC experienced a bed shortage, at times treating more than 50 additional patients. Since then Northern Health has been able to address the increased demand.

“We’re going to be able to mitigate for a period of time but at some point in the next number of years we’re going to need some additional capacity.” said McMillan.

To try and decrease the number of Seniors in hospital, the city is already planning to develop more housing in Prince George.
