UNBC WBB scrappy in defeat against Victoria

So close they could almost taste it.

The UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team played their hearts out over the weekend in Vancouver Island but fell short in a pair of hard-fought losses to the Victoria Vikes.

On Friday, the T-Wolves dropped a 73-69 decision to the Vikes. Sveta Boykova had a monster game in a losing effort tallying 20 points to go along with five rebounds.

Sarah Kuklisin and Viktoriia Filatova each hooped ten points each. However, the Vikes balanced attack proved to be just enough as Makena Anderson, Abigail Becker, Karis de Paiva and Natalie Allison all had double-digit points.

The biggest discrepancy in the contest was the free-throw differential where Victoria went 27-for-44 while UNBC made one of two shot attempts.

On Saturday, the Vikes outlasted UNBC 70-60.

Boykova had 13 points in defeat for the Timberwolves while Filatova posted 12.

Victoria received big nights from Becker and Anderson who had 18 and 16 points respectively. UNBC drops to 1-3 while Victoria is 3-1.

On the men’s side, the Timberwolves suffered a pair of lopsided losses against Victoria – 102-48 on Friday followed by a 92-62 defeat on Saturday.

During the first half of the double-header, every Vikes player except Scott Morozov registered points. Renaldo Robinson had a team-high 18 for the hosts while Ethan Boag tallied 17.

UNBC’s top scorer was Evgeny Baukin with 15.

Maffia dominated the Timberwolves on Saturday night blasting a game-high 35 points. Eleven out of the 12 Vikes (4-0)players who dressed found their way on the scoresheet.

Baukin, Justin Sunga and Josh Gillespie all had 10 points or more for UNBC who drops to 0-4.
