Reservoir filling completed on Site C, BC Hydro says

After 11 weeks, BC Hydro says reservoir filling has been completed at the Site C dam.

Reservoir filling started in late August, and the dam started generating power at the end of October.

BC Hydro is strongly urging the public to stay out of the reservoir area for at least the next year.

They say this is due to potential hazards on the reservoir, such as the land continuing to stabilize, floating vegetation debris and ice.

BC Hydro says they also have conducted more than a thousand inspections and collected more than a million instrumentation readings to ensure the safe operation of the dam since reservoir filling started.

They added key project structures are performing well.

Slope stability instrumentation monitoring has been occurring daily, along with  weekly visual inspections.

BC Hydro says reservoir shoreline and slope changes have been within the expected range during filling.

Additionally, cultural monitors from Treaty 8 First Nations have monitored the reservoir filling process throughout the reservoir area, and environmental monitoring, including of wildlife and fish, will continue during operations of the dam.

The project remains on track to have all six generating units in service by fall 2025.
