SD57 sees little change in class size numbers this year

Average student numbers per class remain fairly similar heading into the 2024-25 SD 57 school year.

The numbers were presented during Tuesday’s school board meeting.

Kindergarten classes stay at 19, with grades 1 through 3 at 21, 4 through 7 dropping from 26.1 to 25.9 and 8 to 12 nearly dropping a full student from 23.5 to 22.7.

Chairperson, Craig Brennan says the lack of change isn’t a surprise.

“The models are fairly close, we try to be fairly close in our predicting because otherwise, it would impact change in classes in September which is something you obviously try to avoid.”

“I think overall, staff did a really good job predicting.”

Brennan says class sizes are predicted to remain fairly stable over the next few years, which he notes is good for planning.

Behind the scenes, he says no big changes are expected as long as the student can be put in without exceeding the limit.

If that were to occur, SD57 would have to create another division, find a teacher and incur the costs.

The max number of students per class in kindergarten is 20, grades 1 through 3 is 22, 4 to 12 is 30.
