The first major snowstorm of the season is around the corner for the Prince George area.

Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Bulkley Valley, Williston, Stuart – Nechako, Prince George, McGregor, Cariboo North and South and Yellowhead areas.

A low pressure system over the Gulf of Alaska will bring snow to parts of the northern and central BC interior beginning this morning (Wednesday) and continuing until Friday morning.

Snowfall amounts could range between 20 to 40 cm with the higher amounts most likely near the western slopes of the Rockies.

However, there is uncertainty where the band of heaviest snow will occur, especially for the Stuart-Nechako, Prince George, and Cariboo regions.

Light flurries will transition to more consistent snowfall by tonight.

Snowfall may be heavy at times on throughout Thursday as the system moves across the central BC interior.

Conditions are expected to improve Friday as the system moves eastward and away from the province.

By the weekend, temperatures will shift to seasonal at around minus 2 degrees and bring an active pattern, making temperatures rise again due to a mild air mass.

During the transition, precipitation could also change to rain, and potentially even freezing rain.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
