Late comeback bid falls short for Cougars in Red Deer

The Prince George Cougars just can’t seem to find their way past rookie goaltenders as they fall 3-2 to the Red Deer Rebels.

The Cougars put 40 shots on Peyton Shore, who made his WHL debut last night (Friday) in front of 3,646 fans at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

“We’re playing arrogant hockey, I think we just want to outscore the opposition, we’re not willing  to dig in and work and do things right all over the ice,” said Associate Coach Jim Playfair on the post-game show on 94.3 the Goat.

“I think we were looking over our shoulder a little bit too much. I thought we felt with a young goaltender and all the firepower we have, we’d walk in here and score goals. We have to readjust our mindset and realize we’ve been outworked for about four, five games in a row. So the decision’s got to come from within, from the captain, all the way down from the assistants, all the way through the rest of the group and decide, either we’re going to outwork our skill and be a good team, or we’re going  to run for the hills and  hopefully score on the powerplay and win hockey games, it’s actually unacceptable.”

The Cougars scored once on the powerplay on five attempts, with the powerplay marker coming late in the third from Carson Carels to cut the lead to 3-2 with less than a minute to go.

Terik Parascak opened the scoring for the Cougars past the halfway mark of the first period, firing a Borya Valis feed past Shore on the odd-man rush.

Matthew Gard tied it late in the first putting a point blank shot past Josh Ravensbergen.

With the game tied at one heading into the second, the Cougars put a high volume of shots on Shore, but the rookie netminder turned away all 21 he faced in the middle frame.

The Rebels only put five shots on Ravensbergen in the period.

Red Deer took the lead in the final frame, with Gard scoring his second and Jaxon Fuder scoring as well.

Ravensbergen stopped 28 shots for the Cougars in the loss.

The box score is here.
