On average, December sees the most vehicle accidents compared to other months, and Prince George is no stranger to that fact.
The City holds the top spot for most reported crashes in the north, with last year’s total at 469, with the next highest being 125 in Fort St John.
Road Safety at Work Program Director, Trace Acres believes the increase in accidents is due to the change in seasons and the holidays.
“I think what happens not only in Prince George, but throughout the province, is that people might tend to forget some of the basics of road safety during the winter and cut some corners on road safety, because everybody’s trying to get somewhere quickly.”
Acres adds December has the fewest hours of daylight, which can contribute to crashes, as well as distracted driving, speeding, and impairment.
In ICBC’s North Central Crash Count, out of the 469 crashes last December, 66 had a casualty involved.
He says the month with the second highest crash number province-wide is July due to more people on the road and travelling for the holidays, similar to December.
Before going on the roads, Acres says to give yourself time, not following other vehicles too closely, make sure visibility is as best as it can be, and check conditions before heading out.
