PG Fire Prevention Week Underway

When was the last time you tested your smoke alarms?

That’s one question Prince George Fire and Rescue is asking citizens as they kick off Fire Prevention Week.

Smoke alarms are the focus of this year’s campaign. Specifically, where to place them.

“Hear the Beep Where You Sleep” said Chief Fire Prevention Officer Marcel Profeit. “We want to make sure that everyone can hear their smoke alarms when they’re ringing from their bedroom or whichever room they happen to be sleeping in.”

He says in the event of a fire, every second counts.

“Smoke and Fire spread very rapidly” said Profeit. “If you can save yourself thirty seconds by hearing and being woken up by a smoke alarm in your bedroom, that’s thirty extra seconds that you’re going to give yourself to get safely outside.”

He also suggests that residents test their alarms once a month and change them every 10 years or sooner if necessary.

Fire Prevention Week ends this Saturday.
