Third Avenue temporary housing facility set to open

A 42-unit temporary housing project in Prince George is nearing completion.

According to BC Housing, the facility, located on 397 Third Avenue will be ready in the coming weeks, helping those experiencing or are at risk of homelessness.

Residents who have been living in community shelters long-term or at the Lower-Patricia encampment and surrounding area are eligible to move in.

Individuals will be assessed through Coordinated Access and Assessment process and selected through a collaboration via various agencies including BC Housing.

Once people move into the new spaces, this will free up more shelter spaces to those sheltering outdoors.

The third-avenue site will feature a commercial kitchen, amenity space and common laundry. Units are private and fully furnished along with other items such as towels and sheets.

There will be third-party security, cameras and staff training to mitigate security risks. Also, a gatehouse will be installed after occupancy. There will be a smoking area available outside within sight of the office and cameras. There will also be a supervised safe consumption area.
