SD57 on the right track as year comes to an end

2024 is nearing its end, and School District 57 Superintendent, Jameel Aziz is looking back positively.

He began the role in April of this year to help find where they were at, and determine the pluses and challenges that were being faced.

Aziz says the next steps were to work with the board and create a plan.

“A big part of that work was putting together a budget in the spring of earlier this year, where we really had to make some difficult decisions based on the fact that we were running kind of a continuous deficit situation.”

“We had to make some changes to some programs, and to some structures.”

Aziz added coming out of the summer, they were in a better financial position than forecasted, and are now looking to make sure schools have equitable resources and structures in place.

He notes stability is a challenge being worked on, and that people are looking forward to improvements in that area.

“One of our biggest challenges is still the human resource piece. We have positions that we’re having a hard time filling, whether that’s teachers or EA’s.”

“That really exists across many systems. We really are focused on trying to figure out how to make our district a more attractive place to work.”

Heading into 2025, the engagement process will begin as the district enters the final year of it’s strategic plan, and upgrade communication.

Aziz believes the school district is heading into the new year in a positive direction.
