City Council chooses members for Citizen’s Recognition Program committee

Prince George City Council has chosen which members will sit on the Select Committee for the Citizen’s Recognition Program.

City Council chose the four members of Council that will sit on the committee at last night’s (Monday) meeting.

Mayor Simon Yu nominated to have himself, as well as Councillors Garth Frizzell, Susan Scott, and Brian Skakun sit on the committee.

“I would feel more comfortable if more senior members of this council, who have over the years, seen how the award was rewarded to deserving recipients,” Yu said.

“Because whatever we do, we should avoid turning this into a political exercise.”

Councillor Kyle Sampson originally brought the idea forward.

“I really strongly reject the notion that anybody would want this to be political, that’s been brought up a couple of times and I think that’s an unfair characterization of this,” Sampson said.

“This is about celebrating greatness in our community and so I think we all, around this table, want the same thing, which is celebrating great contributions to our community at all levels.”

“The intention is great, but all roads to hell is paved with great intentions,” Mayor Yu replied.

Sampson received a nomination to sit on the committee from Councillor Cori Ramsay, who also nominated herself, as well as Councillors Ron Polillo and Tim Bennett.

Councillor Trudy Klassen was nominated by Tim Bennett, but she declined the nomination.

It went to a ballot to decide which four members of the eight nominees would sit on the committee.

Councillors Frizzell, Sampson, Scott and Skakun will sit on the committee.

Council also voted to direct City Administration to start the recruitment process to find three members of the public to join the committee, more information on that will come at a later date.

City Council also approved the terms of reference for the Committee.
