Bio-oil facility completed in Prince George

Prince George will soon be producing bio-oil as a new facility has been completed.

Arbios Biotech announced the construction completion of the Chuntoh Ghuna facility, which uses hydrothermal liquefication (HTL) to turn forest and other woody residuals into renewable bio-oil.

Arbios said this is the worlds largest HTL facility, and is designed to produce 50,000 barrels of bio-oil a year.

They said the oil can be refined into transportation fuels with a low carbon footprint, helping push a carbon neutral future.

The facility will also contribute to the local economy, create jobs and foster long-term partnerships with Indigenous communities.

Lheidli Tenneh First Nation was part of development, with the facility name meaning “the forest lives”, as it stands on their unceded territory.

Support is being given through the Province’s Initiative Agreement Program under the Low Carbon Fuel Standard.

During development, support was also provided by Sustainable Development Technology Canada, the BC Innovative Clean Energy Fund, and Natural Resources Canada’s Clean Growth Program.

The facility is in the commissioning phase, with operations beginning this year.

More information about Arbios Biotech and the facility can be found on their website here.
