Downtown Prince George building “a complete write off” after yesterday’s fire

Prince George Fire Crews knocked down a commercial structure fire on the 1100 block of 4th Avenue yesterday.

At around 1:30pm, Fire Rescue Crews from four halls responded to the fire, where they found heavy smoke coming from the former City Secondhand store.

Fire Chief Cliff Warner says crews were able to make entry, but quickly faced challenges.

“There was an extreme storage load inside the building, preventing our crews from progressing very far.”

“That, and the expanding conditions of the fire resulted in them retreating to a defensive attack.”

Warner adds extreme heat, amount of storage, and difficulties getting water on the fire ultimately led to all contents igniting.

In terms of damages from the fire, he says the building is a complete write off, with the only wall standing being against the Croft Hotel.

Warner says the cause of the fire remains unknown, and will be coordinating with other entities to start an investigation.

The neighbouring Croft Hotel received minor water and smoke damage, and crews remain on scene attending to hot spots.
