PG Ice Oval hits its stride with consistent cooler weather

After inconsistent weather in Prince George, the PG Ice Oval has found some stability to remain open this season.

The ice has been open for roughly a month, though had to close briefly for the recent warming period.

Outdoor Ice Oval Society President, Kathy Lewis says there’s still a chance it could close if the ice base doesn’t improve.

“One of the things we had been trying to do is do some more flooding at night, which is a bit of a demand on our volunteers.”

“We have a hard time getting ice down if people are skating on it so, we can only flood in the mornings before we open, and in the evenings again.

Lewis says if a decent base can be built up, especially with snow before a warming period to act as an insulator, they can get through the warming trends.

As for how the base is currently, she says they’re close to decent with some ruts and uneven ice at the start of the season, but are doing ok considering the weather that’s been had.

Lewis added they’re doing a lot better compared to last year, where they were only open 27 days, and this year shaping up to be quite a bit better.

More information about the PG Ice Oval can be found on their website here.
