Northern Health promotes PURPLE Crying program

Northern Health is promoting a couple of items about newborn babies this month.

One is the CLICK for Babies campaign.

Doctor Diana Bark says it started this month and will continue through February.

“What we started this month is the CLICK campaign which is an awareness campaign around PURPLE teaching and this is when we provide hand made purple caps to families along side the purple teaching that occurs in healthcare encounters. And the purple cap provides a teaching tool and a visual reminder for healthcare staff and families about this issue.”

Bark says the PURPLE Crying program provides year round education to families of newborn infants.

“It is an education program for parents and caregivers of newborns about a normal phase of infant development when babies cry the most. In this program we provide information and resources on infant crying, managing the frustrations that come with that like alternative soothing methods and coping strategies for the caregivers, as well as talking about the dangers of shaking a baby.”

Bark says people can find information about the PURPLE campaign online at dontshake.ca

She says they also provide information at certain specific times for parents and caregivers.

“Families, before they are discharged from hospital for example after delivery, that’s another time where they can receive this messaging from nurses. Or also at another time point when they go for their well baby checkup. For example a couple of months at their well baby visit, that’s another opportunity for healthcare providers and families to discuss the PURPLE teachings.”

Doctor Bark says these time points are when infant crying is the longest, and also when they cry the most.
