New route between Prince George & Barkerville being explored

Wells Mayor Robin Sharpe says they are exploring a new potential route to Barkerville from Prince George.

A different route following the Bowron River connecting the historic town to Highway 16 at Purden Lake was being considered, but with the Indian Creek Bridge being decommissioned this summer those plans fell through.

“There is no exact cost yet, but it should be less than half as much (as the Bowron River route).” Sharpe said

He says the new proposed route would wind through the lakes in the area between the Bowron River and Highway 97 before coming out about 40 kilometers east of Prince George on Highway 16.

Sharpe says the road is pretty much all already there, and would just require a few upgrades and a minor bridge update.

He says he has been working with Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes to evaluate the viability of the route. Forestry engineers are now going to drive the new potential route to see exactly what work needs to be done.
