Smartphones and temperature continue to put strain on B.C. couples

BC Hydro is recommending couples come to a compromise to alleviate late-night screen time and temperature disagreements.

They said temperature disputes have continued to create a divide for decades, however, conflicts over electronic device use during bedtime is becoming more prominent, leading to some couples to sleep separately.

A survey revealed over 20 per cent of partners said phone or tablet use in the bedroom is the most annoying, second to snoring at 43 per cent.

As for temperature disputes, more than a third of British Columbian couples who share a bedroom, report having arguments about the bedroom temperature at night.

BC Hydro recommends different steps to keep the peace, including:

  • Getting a programmable thermostat to keep the temperature at an agreeable number.
  • Using separate duvet covers or wearing warmer or cooler pajamas to ease temperature tensions.
  • Setting the thermostat to 16 degrees when away from home or sleeping, 21 degrees when relaxing or watching T.V., and 18 degrees when cooking or doing housework.
  • Switching the device to low power mode.
  • Wearing an eye mask.

More information can be found on BC Hydro’s website here.
