Hartley’s guest this week is Ronnie Shuker (Part 2), author, editor, freelance writer and editor at large at the Hockey News.

Shuker embarked on an eight-month cross-country journey going to rinks across Canada for his book The Country and the Game: 30,000 Miles of Hockey Stories.

During the episode, he discussed a number of topics including:

  • Starting his journey in Newfoundland; chatting with Terry Ryan Jr and Sr.
  • Discovering the underground hockey and roller hockey community in Haida Gwaii
  • Passion for hockey in First Nation communities; fondness of the prairies and spending time with the Hutterite community in Manitoba
  • Travelling from Stewart to Prince George, catching a Cougars playoff game; making contact with former bus driver Ralph Posteraro
  • Last hockey game with his Dad in Kamloops

Since moving to Prince George in 2015, Brendan has covered local sports including the WHL’s Prince George Cougars, Prince George Spruce Kings, UNBC Timberwolves, Cariboo Cougars AAA, and Northern Capitals U18 female hockey teams. Career highlights include play-by-play during the Spruce Kings' BCHL championship runs in 2018 and 2019, including the Doyle Cup win. He also covered the 2019 National Junior A Championship, the 2017 Telus Cup, the 2022 World Women’s Curling Championship, and the 2022 BC Summer Games. Brendan is the news voice on 94.3 The Goat and Country 97 FM, reporting on crime, real estate, labour, and environmental issues. Outside of work, he officiates box lacrosse and fastball, sits on the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame board, and co-hosts the Hockey North podcast.

CN Centre’s 30th Anniversary shaping up to be big celebration

The City of Prince George will be celebrating the CN Centre at the end of the month. On September 28th, the City will be celebrating the venue's 30th birthday with an event from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m., which will also include the City's annual International Students Welcome and Thank You PG Volunteer Appreciation event. 

SuperWalk helps bring awareness to Parkinson’s in Prince George

The annual Parkinson's SuperWalk in Prince George saw an "overwhelming response" from the community this year. SuperWalk Coordinator Gina Beddome said they normally get between 75 and 100 people out for the walk, but they were hoping for at least 200. 

Kodiaks shredded by Okanagan air attack

It was a Saturday night to forget at Masich Place Stadium for the Prince George Kodiaks, as they fell 60-6 to the undefeated Okanagan Sun. "It was execution, we weren't our finest for sure," said Kodiaks Head Coach Jamie Boreham.
