City Council to discuss bid for 2030 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games

Prince George City Council will discuss a bid for the 2030 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games at Monday’s meeting.

City Council previously submitted letters of intent to bid for these games, as well as the 2028 Special Olympics Winter Games.

According to a staff report to Council, the letter of intent was approved by Special Olympics Canada, and a bid intention meeting was held on February 6th.

“In collaboration with Tourism Prince George, staff has done the research and have determined that we are highly prepared with accommodations, venues, support, and experience to host the 2030 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games,” the report reads.

“Work has begun on the bid document as there was a tight turnaround with the deadline for submission being March 1st.”

If Prince George is shortlisted, Special Olympics will come to Prince George for a site visit in late spring, with an announcement of the host city expected in the summer.

The staff report estimates 1,700 participants would come to Prince George in early July to compete in ten sports over five days, with a total stay of seven days.

The report also estimates the economic impact would be over $8 million directly to the City, and over $12.5 million across the country.

At Monday’s meeting, Prince George City Council will vote on approving Administration to submit the bid, approving funding in the amount of $400,000 cash and up to $100,00 in-kind from the Major Events Reserve Fund, and approving the responsibility of financial deficit associated with hosting the games, if any.

Other items to be discussed at Monday’s meeting include an update on the Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park Playground, and development permit summaries for December and January.

The full agenda for Monday’s meeting can be found here.
