Spruce Kings edge Coquitlam to keep playoff hopes alive

The Spruce Kings won a hockey game at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre in Coquitlam on Friday night.

Unfortunately, the 20th victory of the season probably felt a little hollow as the BCHL’s most northern-based club failed to make up any ground on the Langley Rivermen in the race for the final playoff spot in the Coastal Conference, despite a 3-2 triumph against the Express.

Nick Metelkin opened the scoring for the Spruce Kings 9:18 into the first period connecting on a pass from Nicholas Papineau.

In the second, Brock Cummings and Will Moore joined the offensive party extending PG’s upper-hand to 3-0 after 40 minutes.

Coquitlam woke up a little too late from their pre-game nap as Cam Russo and Andrej Kovacevic scored in the final few minutes of the third to draw the hosts with one.

Spruce Kings netminder Charles-Edward Gravel made 30 saves in the victory while Express counterpart Andrew Ness stopped 29 visiting pucks in defeat.

PG remains four points back of the Rivermen for eighth spot after Langley edged the Blackfalds Bulldogs 5-3.

The Rivermen (20-22-8-1) visit the Spruce Grove Saints (18-27-6-0) tonight (Saturday). PG is back in action against the conference-leading Chilliwack Chiefs (34-12-5-0).

The Spruce Kings wrap up their three-game road swing Sunday afternoon against the Surrey Eagles (29-17-5-0).
