Halloween Prompts SD57 Nutrition Reminder

As kids head back to school with Halloween candy in their lunch boxes, the district is talking about healthy food choices.

“The board of education recognizes the importance of proper nutrition and of course physical and intellectual development of children” said Superintendent Brian Pepper. “Because kids spend a tremendous amount of time at school, schools need to educate students in the area of food choice.”

He says different schools may have different rules around how much candy is allowed.

“It varies from school to school” said Pepper. “We’ll say we encourage the Halloween treats stay at home or at other times recommend, if you must, please only put a small number of items in the lunch bag that comes to school.”

Pepper recommends moderation of sweets and nutritious options to keep kids healthy and make that halloween candy last longer.
