Northern Health awarded for energy saving plans

This morning FortisBC presented Northern Health with a grant cheque of almost $240,000 to recognize energy saving initiatives at Northern Health facilities.

Northern Health Energy Manager Les Sluggett says the money will go to making their buildings even greener. “We are using some of these grants for energy studies to be able to show where we need to improve the system and also for the improvements themselves.”

He says the money saved on utilities will be passed onto patient care.

Sluggett says that Northern Health faces a special set of challenges when it comes to saving energy. “We have some disadvantages being in the north, one is increased heating loads, although our buildings are built for that.”

He pointed to unique project in one of the rehab pools that saw a dehumidifier installed that reduced the need for ventilation and air conditioning costs in the summer.

The initiatives are saving Northern Health enough natural gas to heat 90 homes for a year.
