The Prince George Legion is leading up to Remembrance Day with a traditional church parade.
The march will start at the Memorial Park cemetery, ending at the veteran’s memorial.
In the war years, church parades were held to bless the soldiers before they went to battle.
“Traditionally before they went into battle, they had a church parade.” said Legion President Bruce Gabriel “The PadrĂ© or the Minister would bless the troops and the colours, their flags. So they would pray for them and ask for god’s protection”
Gabriel says it’s chilling to picture what church parades were like for soldiers going into the field.
“It just makes you think back. What those people went into, knowing that they were going into a battle and that they themselves and a lot of their comrades may not come back” said Legion President Bruce Gabriel.
159 full-size Canadian flags will fly in honour of those lost in Afghanistan.
The event will be followed by an afternoon of presentations and refreshments at the Legion on Sixth Avenue.
