Strike Over: Air Canada, union representing flight attendants reach tentative deal

Air Canada flight attendants have reached a tentative contract agreement with the airline, after all-night talks.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents more than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants, said with the assistance of the chief mediator appointed by the federal government, the deal struck will be submitted to its membership for a vote.

This should mean Prince George air travellers will be able to breath a little easier in the weeks ahead.

In the meantime, YXS Spokesperson, Chrissy Blok told Vista Radio passengers will still encounter some short-term turbulence.

“They are now resuming operation of their mainline at Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge. It is going to take sometime as we are expecting a 7-10 day delay or cancellation for people that have booked on those flights.”

Blok noted travellers still be caught in the crossfire can get home buy using other airlines for now.

“They can still book alternate arrangements and Air Canada does have a few options listed on their website for travellers.”

The union did not give out many details on the agreement, but said it does guarantee ground pay for their members — something that’s been a major sticking point in talks.

Air Canada said flights will resume this evening (Tuesday), but it could take a week or more to get back to full operation.

Flights to and from Prince George Airport (YXS), operated by Jazz Aviation LP as Air Canada Express, have continued to operate as scheduled and remain unaffected by this development.

Travellers are advised to check their flight status directly with Air Canada as the airline works to restore service.
