Downtown PG hopes to have security camera pilot project up and running by winter

Prince George’s security camera pilot project in the downtown area could be coming online this year.

During today’s (Tuesday) Standing Committee on Public Safety, Downtown PG Executive Director Chrisie Berry provided a brief update on the project.

She said she’s been speaking with multiple providers to get quotes for camera cost, cost of install, and which providers in the city can do the install.

“I’m expecting to have that before the end of the week,” Berry said.

“As long as everything goes according to plan, I will order cameras as soon as I have that information.”

Berry noted next steps will include talking to businesses to figure out where they will go.

“It’s got to be attached to a building where there’s power, we’re looking at Wi-Fi, and a secure place for a hard drive to sit,” she explained.

She said the goal is to have them installed before winter.

“We’re hoping that the success will then create more years of this program running and hopefully we’ll be able to expand it beyond the pilot program itself,” she said.

City Council approved funding for the pilot in December.
