Premier David Eby gave some attention to Prince George during the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) Convention.
PG Councillor Kyle Sampson said Eby’s address had a great focus on PG and the north, which brought some reassurance.
He said Eby committed to action on a number of important issues they raised.
“The first one being the Crossroads fire and downtown street disorder.”
“He shared in our meeting, but then in front of the entire UBCM delegation that this individual who’s done this has quite a long rap sheet, and that’s just not acceptable, and he’s committed to helping solve and fight street disorder in Prince George.”
Sampson said the Premier committed to Prince George being the next community to get an involuntary care centre, adding it helps them get one step closer to bringing resolve to some of the issues being faced.
As of now, there’s no timeline as to when the involuntary care centre would be in PG, but Sampson said that will be their follow-up.
He noted this will be a multi-faceted approach, and will continue to advocate for further bail-reform, and more investments into public safety measures, law enforcement, and programs to help the community.
Sampson said everyone has championed these issues to the best of their ability, and have gotten the attention of the government.
He believes the City will see incremental steps towards solutions for the biggest issues facing Prince George from health care, public safety, to economic diversification.
The Premier also made note of Prince George potentially hosting a UBCM Convention down the road, which Sampson said not only brings economic impact, but brings the eyes of the entire province.
The UBCM Convention wraps up today (Friday) with more information here.
