T-Wolves, Golden Bears split a pair of nailbiters in MBB; Alberta eases past UNBC in WBB

No lead is safe at the Northern Sports Centre.

It’s a lesson both the Alberta Golden Bears (3-1) and UNBC Timberwolves both learned during their weekend double header.

On Friday, the Timberwolves (1-2) rose from the ashes, erasing an 18-point deficit to defeat the Golden Bears 78-77.

Second-year big man Miller Davies was sent to the foul line with 0.5 seconds remaining and drained both his free-throws secure UNBC’s first win of the 2025-26 campaign.

Evgeni Baukin put up a monster performance including a game-high 30 points and 10 rebounds.

UNBC received offensive contributions from eight different players in Friday’s win.

Alberta’s Isaac Simon 20 points in five rebounds in defeat.

The Golden Bears jumped out to a 28-14 edge after the first quarter but were outscored by the Timberwolves in the final 30 minutes, including 27-19 spread in the fourth quarter.

Nine lead changes were recorded in the game.

Saturday was a reversal of fortune as it was the Timberwolves who squandered 14-point lead in the second quarter dropping a 74-67 decision in overtime to Alberta.

The Golden Bears had three players reach double-digit points including Simon (16) along with Nash Semeniuk (13) and Kyle Varner (15).

Baukin put up another stellar outing for the Timberwolves accounting for 23 points and 7 rebounds.

Haukur Davidson chipped in with 10 points while Tony Kibonge tallied nine.

Alberta outscored UNBC in the paint by a 34-28 margin.

In women’s action, the Alberta Pandas outclassed the youthful Timberwolves by scores of 83-35 (Friday) and 90-36 (Saturday).

On Friday, 11 Panda players contributed to the offense as Jadyn Tanner and McKinley Penninga picked up 11 points each.

Alberta’s bench outscored UNBC’s by a 46-10 margin.

The Panada started off the game red-hot outscoring the Timberwolves 22-4 in the first quarter. Alberta sizzled from beyond the arch going 14-of-15.

Hazel Phillips and Viiktoria Filatova had a team high nine points for UNBC.

In Saturday’s win, all 12 Panda players who dressed recorded at least a bucket . Tanner carried the mail again with a game-high 20 points while Kiah Easton-Ihediohanma recorded 16.

UNBC was just 10-for-51 shooting including a 3-for-20 mark from three-point range.

Filatova scored 13 points in defeat for the Timberwolves.

The Pandas (4-0) outscored UNBC (0-3) 39-12 in the second half. Alberta also dominated on the glass outrebounding the host T-Wolves 40-12.

Next for UNBC is another home weekend Friday (6 and 8pm) and Saturday (4 and 6pm) against Trinity Western at the Northern Sports Centre.
