Double Trouble: UNBC basketball teams swept up by heatwave in Kelowna

Tempting fate can too many times can come back to bite you.

The UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team learned that the hard way on Saturday dropping an 82-79 close shave to the UBCO Heat Kelowna.

Mike Adarkwah-Nti hit three free-throws with eight seconds left in the game, capping off a 28-10 fourth quarter surge for the Heat to complete the weekend sweep.

The Timberwolves started fast jumping out to 25-14 and 51-37 leads in the first half.

Both teams kept it even in the third quarter, until UNBC wilted under the late-game pressure.

Longtime nemesis Jalen Shirley put in another big performance against the T-Wolves tallying 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting. His sidekick Lamine Condie kicked in 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Adarkwah-Nti, who capped off the comeback, finished with 22 points off the bench for UBCO to go along with eight rebounds.

Evgeny Baukin once again delivered, albeit, in a losing cause for UNBC hooping 25 points. Isiah Bias recorded 14 points.

A costly sore spot for the Timberwolves will be their lacklustre performance at the charity stripe going just 14-for-25 on free throws.

Okanagan on the other hand was 19-for-25 from the line.

The UNBC men drop to 2-5, while UBCO improves to 3-5.

In women’s action, the Timberwolves fell 61-40 to Heat dropping to 0-7 on the campaign.

Tsuki Tsusuzki led the way with 15 points for UBCO while running mate Tennyson McCarthy chipped in with 13.

The Heat outrebounded UNBC 44-26.

UBCO won by 21 despite going 6-for-27 from three-point range and just 30.6% on field-goals.

That’s because the Timberwolves struggled equally as much if not more offensively converting 12-of-53 field goals along with a 2-for-12 showing from beyond the arch.

Claire Huang tallied 11 points in defeat for the Timberwolves. Amrit Manak chipped in with 10.

Both UNBC basketball teams are back on the road this weekend against the Fraser Valley Cascades Friday and Saturday.
